For those interested in running graphically-intense applications and/or GUI-based software, we provide five remote visualization nodes.  If you do not require hardware accelerated graphics, please use the interactive desktop apps instead of these that run on the visualization nodes.

Some things to keep in mind about the CCR visualization nodes:

  • Starting a visualization session can take anywhere from a few minutes (if the visualization nodes have available capacity) to up to 24 hours (if there are current jobs running and the nodes are full).  Wait times for the visualization nodes can be longer than regular cluster compute nodes because there are so few of them.
  • The visualization session you're starting is an actual job on the CCR academic cluster and therefore subject to the same issues that may affect jobs submitted directly to the batch scheduler, SLURM.  The scheduler looks at all jobs submitted and puts them in priority order while checking to see what nodes (servers) are available for use.
  • There are three OpenGL-capable visualization nodes and two CUDA-capable visualization nodes.
  • Only two jobs (sessions) can run at one time on each visualization node.
  • Users may only run one visualization session at a time.
  • Visualization sessions are permitted to run for 24 hours and will be canceled when time expires, whether you close the session or not.  Please make sure you're monitoring your sessions so you save your files before you're logged off.

  • PLEASE be fair to other users and log off when you're done rather than waiting for time to expire.

To access the visualization node desktop session apps, click on the "Interactive Apps" menu at the top of the window and choose one of the available "Viz Node" options:

Detailed information about each of these options can be found in these articles:

Viz Node - CUDA Desktop

Viz Node - OpenGL Desktop

Viz Node - OpenGL DISABLED Desktop

Remember:   If you do not require hardware accelerated graphics, please use the interactive desktop apps instead of these that run on the visualization nodes.

Launching GUIs for COMSOL, MATLAB, StarCCM, and ABAQUS:

COMSOL:

In the terminal window, load your required modules and then type:

comsol -np 5 -tmpdir $SLURMTMPDIR -mpmode owner

MATLAB:

In the terminal window, load your required modules and then type:

matlab -nosoftwareopengl

StarCCM:

Make sure to use the OpenGL DISABLED desktop app

In the terminal window,  load your required modules and then type:

starccm+ -clientldpreload libvglfaker.so

ABAQUS:

In the terminal window, first list out all the available versions of Abaqus:

module avail abaqus

Then decide which one you want to run.  Make sure to load the "-viz" version of the ABAQUS module:

module load abaqus/2019-viz

abaqus cae

All done?

When you're done with your session, please logout by clicking on your name at the top right corner of the window and choosing "Log Out"

REMEMBER:  Visualization sessions only last a maximum of 24 hours and will be terminated automatically when time expires so SAVE YOUR DATA!
